Olsen Megan, Raunak Mohammad. A framework for simulation validation coverage // Proceedings of the 2013 Winter Simulation Conference R. Pasupathy, S.-H. Kim, A. Tolk, R. Hill, and M.E. Kuhl, eds. – Washington, USA. – P.1569-1580.
We propose a validation coverage metric to quantify the validation performed on a simulation model based on the possible validation that could be performed on it. This metric takes into account the aspects of the simulation model that should be validated. To show how such a metric could be utilized, we propose a version of the metric specific to agent-based models, and analyze three example models. We find that the coverage metric can be used to quantify validation on a variety of simulation models.

Solving location problems with simulation modelling – a case from the construction industry // Proceedings of the 2013 Winter Simulation Conference R. Pasupathy, S.-H. Kim, A. Tolk, R. Hill, and M.E. Kuhl, eds. – Washington, USA. – P.3363-3374.
Location problems are often solved by means of optimization. Simulation is often used to test the feasibility of an optimal solution after that the optimal solution is obtained. The test by simulation is done with more dynamic circumstances, introducing stochastic behavior. This research proposes to solve location problems directly in a simulation model, combining an optimization algorithm within the simulation model, thus providing solutions that are optimized in a stochastic and dynamic environment. The location problem is modeled in Arena and solved with OptQuest.

Using actual de-identified patient data from an Electronic Medical Record system for one year, we model the clinic operations by day of the week and by three types of patient populations via discrete event simulation. Detailed simulation shows that the primary reason for long waiting times could be inadequate time allotted for appointments. Even a five-minute increase in the appointment duration times resulted in significant increases in provider utilization rates and patient waiting times. These results support the observation that due to the unique patient demographics, providers tend to address multiple needs of the patients in each visit, often exceeding the allotted appointment durations.

This paper demonstrates advantages of combining these activities in the context of system performance optimization. Simulation optimization algorithms can be improved by exploiting the ability to observe and change literally anything at any time while a simulation is running. It is also not necessary to stop simulating candidates for the optimal system before starting to simulate others. The ability to observe and change many concurrently running simulated systems considerably expands the possibilities for designing simulation experiments.

Serova Elena The Role of Agent Based Modelling in the Design of Management Decision Processes // ISSN 1566-6379 71. Academic Publishing International Ltd. The Electronic Journal Information Systems Evaluation Volume 16 Issue 1 2013, (71-80).
Agent based modelling (ABM) is a new modelling paradigm and one of the most advanced practical developments in modelling. ABM promises to have far-reaching effects on the way that business practitioners and academic researchers use information communication technologies to support decision making at different levels of management. Modern design models and architectural structures are opening up new possibilities and new application areas are coming to the foreground. Multi-agent systems as systems of distributed artificial intelligence are now having a significant influence on information systems design, simulation and analysis. This paper focuses on the various modelling methods and technologies that are employed in the development of intelligent decision support systems. Its goal is to evaluate the role of the agent based modelling in the design of management decision processes. The paper considers the main features of intellectual agent modelling methodology, and discusses the different types modelling categorization. It does so from research base that draws from theoretical underpinnings as well as international and domestic industry practices. The basic principles of agent-based modelling are first introduced and areas of application are then discussed from perspective of real-world applications: flow simulation, organizational simulation, market simulation, and diffusion simulation. The classification of modelling types is discussed, together with and business application simulation frameworks.

The purpose of this article is to explore the interaction of two opposing forces. The forces of wealth accumulation in sturring job creation and the force of satisfaction and the «magic number» in causing job destruction are explored. An agent based model is proposed to explore the potentially competing effects of two hypothesized economic forces. The first is «trickle down» economics in which job creation occurs when wealth accumulates. The second is the «magic number» effect in which retirement occurs when wealth accumulates.

In this paper we present a simulation model for large networks that increases the efficiency compared to a discrete event simulation model. These networks have two different time scales: a fast one and a slow one. The main idea is to replace some of the faster point processes by a «fluid» (called the ghost processes) thus accelerating the execution of the simulation.

Information shared through online social networking platforms is spread from user to user. Although some researchers have argued that this phenomenon can unfold similarly to an epidemic, others have found that information disseminates within a narrow range, propagating only a few levels in a communication network. In an effort to resolve these conflicting findings, we developed an information cascade model to conduct a variance-based global sensitivity analysis to determine the influence of two network attributes on the diffusion of energy saving information. The simulation results of the base model showed that energy saving information failed to generate deep cascades.

We develop an Agent-Based Models (ABM) to investigate factors that affect the growth of rebel uprisings in a notional population. Our ABM expands the civil violence model developed by Epstein by enabling communication between agents through a genetic algorithm and by adding the ability of agents to form friendships based on shared beliefs. We examine the distribution of opinion and size of sub-populations of rebel and imprisoned civilians, and compare two counter-propaganda strategies.

NetLogo is a multi-agent modeling language, a parallel extension of Logo. NetLogo is designed to enable scientists to conduct their research by building and analyzing agent-based models and for learners to explore and construct models of emergent phenomena. By exploring and constructing such models, students make connections between the micro-level of agents following rules and the macro-level patterns and regularities that constitute the world of natural and social phenomena.

Cloud computing allows the practice of allocating shared computational resources to a diverse set of customers in an on demand fashion. The heterogeneity of customers’ requirements can be characterized by the frequency of demand, the value associated with the service and delay sensitivity. We consider the following two classes of customers: frequent users (FC) and urgent users (UR). Using computational experiments and simulation, we test the effectiveness of heuristic admissions control policies.

This paper will chronicle the modeling approach and preliminary results of the performance impact of the two most significant 2013 Hours of Service regulation changes on a large random over-the-road trucking fleet operating in North America. The ultimate goal of this modeling analysis was to provide data to quantify the pending impact of the regulation changes to guide company strategies to mitigate risk and provide a foundation for proactive customer communications. The simulation model was successfully validated by comparing simulated fleet performance against actual fleet performance.

Elena Yurshevich Methodological aspects of microscopic model application as a part of decision support system // Proceedings of the 13th International Conference «Reliability and Statistics in Transportation and Communication» (RelStat’13), 16–19 October 2013, Riga, Latvia, p. 143–154. At present the microscopic models are used in decision support system (DSS) for urban transportation system planning and development less frequently than macroscopic models. The main reason of that is complexity of microscopic model (MM) creation, actualization and application. Also its application entails the additional requirements to the data: the range of data is wider and they require additional attention to their relevance, credibility and quality. In this paper the methodological aspects of MM application as a part of the model-driven DSS are considered.

The problems of simulation of distributed information systems are discussed. There are a large number of specialized software systems dedicated to design a simulation model of distributed systems and to run a simulation experiment. The article deals with software and language tools of CAD Triad.Net, considers the main features of the simulation model and how to automate changes during simulation experiment. Among the properties of distributed systems one can emphasizes the properties of scalability and fault tolerance, as a result of which the number of computing nodes of the system being modelling may be changed. Particular attention is paid to the automation of operations to add and remove model objects associated with the calculating nodes.

In this paper, we include the crane scheduling problem into the production scheduling environment and combine them together to obtain an integrated schedule. A simulation-based optimization solves this integrated scheduling problem. A genetic algorithm is introduced to determine the al-location of machines and cranes. A simulation model referring to a queuing network is used to evaluate the crane and machine allocation results and provides the fitness value for the genetic algorithm. The sequences of operations (processing and transporting) on each machine and each crane are determined by using the dispatching rule LPT.
