Bazan Peter, German Reinhard. Hybrid simulation of renewable energy generation and storage Grids // Proceedings of the 2012 Winter Simulation Conference. December 2012. Berlin, Germany.
The share of renewable energy sources in energy production is growing steadily. Domestic homes can be equipped with solar panels, micro combined heat and power systems, batteries, and they can become adaptive consumers. They can also deliver energy to the grid and react to the energy supply. This paper presents a hybrid simulation approach for the analysis of a grid of domestic homes equipped with different technological options with respect to efficiency and costs. For energy storage and energy flows the system dynamics modeling paradigm is used whereas control decisions are modeled as statecharts. The highly intermittent solar irradiation and also the electric power and heat demands are implemented as stochastic models. The component-based design allows for quick creation of new case studies. As examples, different homes with batteries, micro combined heat and power systems, or energy carrier carbazole as energy storage are analyzed.

Gathering the social and traffic data is an essential step in the process of traffic relations calculations in the area of interest. The article deals with the way of social traffic data gathering in Slovak cities. The first part defines the boundary conditions for data gathering. The amount of information obtained from each respondent depends on the number of questions asked in the survey, as well as the depth of the questions asked. Mobility surveys have been done for three Slovak cities – Žilina, Trencín and Martin. The detailed description of data gathering and evaluation is shown for Žilina. The real ways of data gathering and other experiences are presented in the next part of article. Finally, some examples from evaluation of mobility survey are presented.

This paper describes a web-based environment for learning discrete simulation. The main goal of the paper is to foster the process of e-learning simulation by providing students and teachers with effective and comprehensive tools for creating, storing and executing discrete system simulation models. For these purposes the FONWEBGPSS application was developed and integrated into the e-learning system Moodle. The integration is implemented on three levels: users, processes and learning resources. The integration of users and processes is performed by synchronizing data in both systems. The integration of learning resources is performed by adjusting and implementing the IEEE LOM profile for learning simulation. In order to evaluate the impact of the proposed solution on the learning simulation outcome, research has been performed within the undergraduate course Simulation and simulation languages at the University of Belgrade. Research results indicate that students achieve better results in learning simulation when using FONWEBGPSS application integrated into the elearning system than learning in a traditional way.

Djanatliev Anatoli, German Reinhard, Kolominsky-Rabas Peter, Hofmann Bernd M. Hybrid simulation with loosely coupled system dynamics and agentbased models for prospective health technology assessments // Proceedings of the 2012 Winter Simulation Conference. December 2012. Berlin, Germany.
Due to the ageing of the world population, the demand for technology innovations in healthcare is growing rapidly. All stakeholders (e.g., patients, healthcare providers and health industry) can take profit of innovative products, but the development degenerates often into a time consuming and cost-intensive process. Prospective Health Technology Assessment (ProHTA) is a new approach that combines the knowledge of an interdisciplinary team and uses simulation techniques to indicate the effects of new innovations early before the expensive and risky development phase begins. In this paper, we describe an approach with loosely coupled system dynamics and agent-based models within a hybrid simulation environment for ProHTA as well as a use-case scenario with an innovative stroke technology. The project ProHTA is a part of the Centre of Excellence for Medical Technology and is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), project grant No. 01EX1013B.

Felberbauer Thomas, Altendorfer Klaus, Hübl Alexander. Using A scalable simulation model to evaluate the performance of production system segmentation in a combined MRP and kanban system // Proceedings of the 2012 Winter Simulation Conference. December 2012. Berlin, Germany.
In this paper two different possible machine allocation policies are studied for a production system consisting of MRP and kanban controlled materials. Performance measures are inventory costs, backorder costs and service level. In policy one, the production system is segmented into one segment for MRP planned materials and one for kanban controlled materials. Policy two implements common machine groups for both kinds of materials. A scalable production planning simulation model is applied which is set up by parameterization of the respective database without any model implementation work. For high set-up times and low number of items, we find that whenever utilization of the production system is high, the production system segmentation policy is preferable. However, for medium and low utilization values common machine groups perform best in all scenarios. The scalable simulation model for different kinds of production systems contributes to further research in this field.

The choice of a basic modeling approach, either population-level or individual-based (IbM), is an important decision to be addressed according to the problem at hand. We present an IbM that simulates the dynamics of a bacterial bioreactor under different handling protocols. The main objective is to provide a simulator that will be easily understood, adjusted and used by non-experts. The model has been designed on the same basis as the IbM simulator INDISIM, and it is described using the ODD protocol. It has been implemented in NetLogo, so that it can be easily shared among the scientific community.

Claudia Krull, Graham Horton. Hidden non-markovian reward models : virtual stochastic sensors for hybrid systems // Proceedings of the 2012 Winter Simulation Conference. 2012.
We are interested in partially observable hybrid systems whose discrete behavior is stochastic and unobservable, and for which samples of some of the continuous variables are available. Based on these samples of the continuous variables, we show how the hidden discrete behavior may be reconstructed computationally, which was previously not possible. The paper shows how Hidden non-Markovian Models (HnMM) can be augmented with arbitrary rate and impulse rewards to model these partially observable hybrid systems. An HnMM analysis method is adapted to find the probability of a sample sequence for a given model, as well as likely system behaviors that caused the observation. Experiments illustrate the analysis method and the possible complexity of the reward measure through a medical example and one from computer gaming. The paper extends the class of partially observable systems analyzable via virtual stochastic sensors into the continuous realm for the first time.

Montes G. (2012). Using Artifical Societies to Understand the Impact of Teacher Student Match on Academic Performance: The Case of Same Race Effects // Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation, 15(4), 8.
This paper presents an agent-based model of the standard U.S. k-12th grade classroom using NetLogo. By creating an artificial society, we identify the casual implications of the same race effect (a moderate sized academic boost to students whose teachers have the same race) on the national educational achievement trends. The model predicts sizeable achievement gaps at the national level, consistent in size with those documented by the US National Report Card stemming from moderate sized same race effects. These results hold for all teacher-student matching phenomena and have implications for educational policy at the aggregate level.

Nassar Khaled, Bayyoumi Ahmed. A simulation study of the effect of mosque design on egress times // Proceedings of the 2012 Winter Simulation Conference. December 2012. Berlin, Germany.
The Mosque prayer hall is perhaps the only architectural space designed for a large number of floorseated occupants. A critical issue in the design of mosques is determining the number and configuration of exit locations. This paper describes a discrete-event simulation model developed to assess the effect of mosque prayer hall configuration on the egress times of the occupants. The simulation model takes into consideration the behavioral aspects of the mosque occupants such as shoe placement and pickup, after prayer lingering, late egress of front rows, after prayers, and congregations inside and outside the mosque. Most of the various exit configurations possible in mosque design are modeled and assessed for total egress time as well as flow rates. It is shown that one-sided exit location out performs all other configurations. The study presents the first such analysis of mosque egress and the results should of great interest to architects and researchers alike.

Patel A., Crooks A., Koizumi N. (2012). Slumulation: An Agent-Based Modeling Approach to Slum Formulations // Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation (JASSS), 15 (4), 2. (Oct 2012).
Slums provide shelter for nearly one third of the world's urban population, most of them in the developing world. Slumulation represents an agent-based model which explores questions such as i) how slums come into existence, expand or disappear ii) where and when they emerge in a city and iii) which processes may improve housing conditions for urban poor. The model has three types of agents that influence emergence or sustenance of slums in a city: households, developers and politicians, each of them playing distinct roles. We model a multi-scale spatial environment in a stylized form that has housing units at the micro-scale and electoral wards consisting of multiple housing units at the macro-scale.

The comprehensive approach to modelling the structural and functional reconfiguration of the distribution network (DN) of the supply chain in terms of destructive influences, leading to its structural dynamics, is proposed. Offered for scenarios of structural dynamics of the DN is a generalized dynamic model of the structural and functional reconfiguration, which provided that the constancy intervals of intermediate structural states of the DN reduced to a multicriteria linear programming problem with bilateral constraints.

Rahm Tobias, Sadri Kambiz, Koch Christian, Thewes Markus, König Markus. Advancement simulation of tunnel boring machines // Proceedings of the 2012 Winter Simulation Conference. December 2012. Berlin, Germany.
In mechanized tunneling a significant loss of performance resulting from weak spots in the supply chain or unforeseen geological conditions is a frequent and costly problem. Furthermore, disturbances of critical machine components can have such impact on the production that unforeseen modifications become necessary. Due to the sequential character the malfunction of one element might evoke cascading-effects which may result in a complete standstill of the tunneling progress. Transparent evaluation of applicable tunnel boring machine designs is essential in order to improve the productivity, avoid unplanned interruptions and to estimate the project duration in general. In order to meet these defiances, this paper presents a multi-method simulation model to investigate the advancement rate of tunnel boring machines. Processrelated disturbances can be considered easily within the presented simulation model. Simulation experiments demonstrate the purposive functionality of the model and visualize the significant influence of technical failure on the overall project performance.

Agent based modelling has received significant attention in the recent years mainly due its wide adoption by scientists in a number of fields. Although agent simulation platforms have proven to be quite mature and expressive for modelling simple agents, little has been done regarding enhancing these platforms by higher level agent oriented programming facilities. This work aims at this direction, i.e. an add-on library to a well known simulation platform aiming at the specification of complex high level agents, using state machines.

Schumann Benjamin, Scanlan James, Fangohr Hans. Complex agent interactions in operational simulations for aerospace design // Proceedings of the 2012 Winter Simulation Conference. December 2012. Berlin, Germany.
Product complexity in the aerospace industry has grown fast while design procedures and techniques did not keep pace. Product life cycle implications are largely neglected during the early design phase. Also, aerospace designers fail to optimize products for the intended operational environment. This study shows how a design, simulated within its anticipated operational environment, can inform about critical design parameters, thereby creating a more targeted design improving the chance of commercial success. An agent-based operational simulation for civil Unmanned Aerial Vehicles conducting maritime Search-and-Rescue missions is used to design and optimize aircrafts. Agent interactions with their environment over the product life-cycle are shown to lead to unexpected model outputs. Unique insights into the optimal design are gained by analysis of the operational performance of the aircraft within its simulated environment.

Spasic Bojan, Onggo Bhakti S.S. Agent-based simulation of the software development process: a case study at AVL // Proceedings of the 2012 Winter Simulation Conference. December 2012. Berlin, Germany.
Software development projects are difficult to manage due to the high uncertainty in their various phases. Simulation is one of the tools that has been used to help software project managers produce project plans. Research into software process simulation modeling (SPSM) shows the dominance of discrete-event simulation and system dynamics. This paper supports the use of ABS in SPSM. We propose a practical effort function to estimate developers’ behavior. The other contribution of this paper is to demonstrate how the ABS model can be developed, calibrated and validated using data readily available to many software development companies/departments. This paper focuses on the construction phase of a tailored Rational Unified Process used in a geographically distributed software development department at AVL. The results look promising but more work needs to be done to include ABS into one of the mainstream simulation paradigms in SPSM.

In this paper, we propose that formal modelling can rigorously define but also naturally lead to realistic simulations of such cases. Our main contribution is presenting how formal statebased methods, namely X-machines, can be employed to model agents in emergency evacuation plans. We also discuss the role of emotions, model artificial emotions that change the behavior of agents under emergency situations, and provide a formalism that models the role of emotions and personality traits in order to create a more realistic scenario.

This paper presents a hybrid simulation model for the management of an eye condition called age-related macular degeneration, which particularly affects the elderly. The model represents not only the detailed clinical progression of disease in an individual, but also the organization of the hospital clinic in which patients with this condition are treated and the wider environment in which these patients live (and their social care needs, if any, are met). The model permits a «whole system» societal view which captures the interactions between the health and social care systems.

The process of facilitation, where a species increases the survival, growth, and fitness of another species, is becoming increasingly recognized as a critical factor in shaping the structure of plant communities. This process is particularly important in stressful environments. Yet few studies have attempted to incorporate positive interactions into community ecological theories such as the neutral theory of biodiversity. Here, we use an equalizing trade-off model as a foundation to study the potential impact of facilitation on species richness and community temporal turnover.

Simulation models are important for planning, implementing and operating logistics systems since they can depict their dynamic system behavior. In the field of logistics, discrete-event models are widely used. Their creation and computation is often very time and labor consuming. For this reason, the paper reviews optimization methods for simulation models to quickly and effectively execute analysis and planning tasks related to production and logistics systems. The paper reviews literature from 2008 to 2011 that describes the latest research in optimization methods for simulation models that are widely used. Most of those methods discussed in this paper are metaheuristics.
