In this paper, we apply agent-based modeling and simulation to study the impact of workers’ influence networks on absence behavior. Our simulation results suggest that small social networks of workers could be more effective than big networks in reducing absenteeism when the social control is active.

The focus areas of our research are simulation and optimization of complex assembly lines for heavy machinery. These production facilities have several specific characteristics: many isolated project networks with precedence constraints and thousands of multi-mode activities, time-bounds for activities and projects, many priority rules, etc. Formally, it is defined as a Multi-Mode Resource-Constrained Multi-Project Scheduling Problem with activity splitting. In this paper, we introduce a specific custom-built simulator designed for this problem domain. The tool supports a variety of real-world extensions and dedicated behavior which usually comes at enormous runtime and development cost when it has to be built into a commercial off-the-shelf simulation tool.

An agent-based tax compliance model for Turkey is developed in this paper. In this model, four kinds of agent archetypes as honest, strategic, defiant, and random are employed. The model is used for simulating evolutionary changes in tax compliance behavior of a population of 10,000 taxpayer agents. The implementation of the model via four simulation scenarios points out that an agent-based evolutionary strategy simulation for Turkish case is valid.

This paper investigates the effects of neighborhood on tax compliance behavior of taxpayers based on an agent-based tax compliance model. To this aim, it is attempted to find out different tax compliance patterns under different “penalty rate - audit rate” combinations and for von Neumann neighborhood, Moore neighborhood, and no neighborhood schemes. The findings throw into sharp relief that both von Neumann and Moore neighborhoods are reducing compliance behavior of taxpayers considerably. The results of scenario runs put the case clearly.

We consider the development of learning analytics tools for distance learning using the agent- based and neural network approaches. It is proposed a hybrid agent-based model with built-in artificial neural networks. The model aims to support the computer simulation experiments evaluating the trends of production and dissemination of knowledge of the participants (agents) of three types: the authors, tutors and students of online courses. We study the efficiency of the software implementation of this model as an example of one of the higher education institutions.

In this paper we describe the architectural framework and information flow model of a stochastic discrete event simulator for evaluating military operational plans. The simulator is tailored for Effect-based Planning where the outcome of a plan is compared with a desired end state. The simulator evaluates several alternative plans and identifies those that are closest to the desired end state. The scenario is carried out in a fictitious country called Bogaland. The simulator focuses on separation of military scenario data (implemented as an XML-model) and military action logic (implemented as a rule based engine). The results show that alternative plans can be identified based on efficiency and effectiveness.

We present different models relating to theories of human behavior and compare them to actual data collected during experiments on irrigation games with 80 individuals divided in 16 different groups. We run a total of 7 different models: from very simple ones involving 0 parameters, to increasingly complex ones that include different type of agents, learning and other-regarding preferences. By comparing the different models we find that the most comprehensive model of human behavior be-haves not far from an ad hoc model built on our dataset.

The perspective on mixing methods from empirical social science projected onto M&S domain exposes high-level purposes related to representation of social phenomena with mixed method approaches. Based on the reviewed literature and qualitative analysis, the general view of ingredients for inferring purposefulness of the multi-method approach in the context of social phenomena representation is proposed.

In this paper we develop a simulation and optimization framework for managing the logistics of distributing relief supplies in a multi-tier supply network. The simulation model captures optimized stocking of relief supplies, distribution operations at federal or state-operated staging facilities, demand uncertainty, and the dynamic progression of disaster response operations. The simulation framework accommodates a wide range of disaster scenarios and stressors, and helps assess the efficacy of response plans and policies for better disaster response.

Much effort goes into building and validating simulation models. Similar care is necessary in the use of the model to support decision making. Good simulation experiment design is important to get useful and valid insights for specific management questions. This introductory tutorial gives an overview of experiment design techniques for justifying and planning a series of simulation runs to uncover the impact of system design parameters on simulation output performance. Graphical methods are emphasized.

This paper presents a novel technique based on maximizing flow through a network where nodes are black-box model units. This network-based method is less sensitive to problem size; the computation effort required to solve the mass balance is proportional to O(m+n) instead of O(mn) with linear programming. The approach was implemented in Flexsim software and used to simulate an iron ore port terminal. Processes included in the model were: mine-to-port trains handling, port terminal equipment (processing rate, capacity, operating logic, failures) and ship loading.

In this respect, this work introduces HLAcloud, a model-driven and cloud-based framework to support both the implementation of a distributed simulation (DS) system from a SysML specification of the system under study and its execution over a public cloud infrastructure. The proposed approach, which exploits the HLA (High Level Architecture) DS standard, is founded on the use of model transformation techniques to generate both the Java/HLA source code of the DS system and the scripts required to deploy and execute the HLA federation onto the PlanetLab cloud-based infrastructure.

Frequently, the problem cannot completely conform to one of the three existing modeling paradigms (discrete event, system dynamics, or agent based modeling). Thinking in terms of a single-method modeling language, the modeler inevitably either starts using workarounds (unnatural and cumbersome constructs), or just leaves part of the problem outside the scope of the model (treats it as exogenous). If our goal is to capture business, economic, and social systems in their interaction, this becomes a serious limitation. In this paper we offer an overview of most used multi-method (or multi-paradigm) model architectures, discuss the technical aspects of linking different methods within one model, and consider examples of multi-method models. The modeling language of AnyLogic is used throughout the paper.

This paper describes the process of developing a hybrid simulation model for a disease called age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a common cause of sight loss in people aged over 65. The model is implemented in the software Any Logic, and combines discrete-event and agent-based simulation. Embedded in each agent there is also an individual compartmental model for disease progression. The overall aim of the hybrid model was to use the specific example of AMD to explore the wider links between the health and social care systems in the UK. We dis-cuss the challenges of model development and the rationale for our modelling decisions, and reflect upon the advantages and disadvantages of using a hybrid model in this case.

This work presents (1) a method for extracting computational decision models from transaction data and (2) a sensitivity analysis of the effect of market design and predictability of dispatcher decisions on system performance. The approach is illustrated for the case of a recent debris removal mission following extensive tornadoes in Alabama in 2011 which involved daily dispatching of an average of 28 hauling vehicles to an average of 6 work locations in the region of interest. Results of model validation against these historical tracking data are presented, along with implications for future work.

This paper deals with Optimization via Simulation of the management of a catchment basin involving dams, electrical power station, pumping station, valves, etc. We explain how an iterative process allows us to integrate optimization algorithms into a discrete-event simulation using a Discrete Optimization via Simulation methodology. This process has been implemented using the DEVS simulator in Python language environment and the obtained results point out the feasibility of the proposed approach. Furthermore this software is actually used by the Corsican Water Agency in order to efficiently manage the South East water network.

This paper presents a hybrid environment for testing and training in control systems in manufacturing. The hybrid environment uses a Discrete Event Simulation model integrated to didactic stations of manufacturing processes used in the training of students. The control logic of the automated system can operate in real-time and integrate to the process, both in the simulation model as in the manufacturing real system.

Modelling and simulation as a service (MSaaS) is defined, and the differences between MSaaS and Soft-ware as a Service are clarified. MSaaS architectures and deployment strategies are surveyed. The top threats to cloud computing and MSaaS, the other security challenges and technical requirements are explained. Accountability, risk and trust modelling are related to each other and also to security and privacy. Those notions and their relations are presented. MSaaS composition in multi-datacenter and/or multi-cloud scenarios is also elaborated on.

In this paper we present REDSim, a spatial agent-based simulation framework for studying emergency departments. REDSim focuses on quantifying the impacts of staff decision processes, such as patient selection, on the length of stay, waiting and boarding times, and other variables. We show REDSim’s effectiveness by comparing four patient selection strategies: longest waiting, shortest distance, random, and highest acuity. REDSim showed that although patient length of stay is not significantly reduced (1.4%) the throughput increases 17% when providers select the closest instead of the highest acuity patient for the next task.

We consider subset selection problems in ranking and selection with tight computational budgets. We develop a new procedure that selects the best m out of k stochastic systems. Previous approaches have focused on individually separating out the top m from all the systems being considered. We reformulate the problem by casting all m-sized subsets of the k systems as the alternatives of the selection problem.

This paper discusses the development of a discrete event simulation of the kidney transplantation system, KSIM. KSIM design is discussed and can easily be adapted to test alternative geographic organ allocation policies. Input analysis employing actual transplantation system data was conducted to best represent patient and organ arrival processes. After discussing our model, we briefly describe how KSIM was verified and validated against twenty years of actual transplantation system information. We also describe the potential usability of KSIM in organ allocation policy development.

Development of a Spatial and Temporal Agent-Based Model for Studying Water and Health Relationships: The Case Study of Two Villages in Limpopo, South Africa // Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation (JASSS), 16 (4): 3. In this paper, we present a tool for understanding the complex relationship between water and public health in rural areas of a developing country. A spatial and temporal agent-based model (ABM) was developed to simulate the current water, sanitation, and health status in two villages in Limpopo Province, South Africa. The model was calibrated using empirical data and published sources. It was used to simulate the effects of poor water quality on the frequency of diarrheal episodes in children, and consequently on child development.

A continuous and discrete system gets distinct approach from modelers, since both have very particular characteristics. Some simulation tools are specialized in one system or another, but the great majority fo-cuses on discrete modeling. However, there are many hybrid systems where a continuous process interfaces with discrete. Despite being possible to model both systems with particular modeling tools, they have to be properly connected. An example of hybrid system is the ethanol production chain, where the transport of the raw material sugar cane has important interactions between the main components of the chain, where there is exchange of equipment, transport and interface of continuous systems with discrete, and vice versa. This study presents the algorithms and techniques used to model the logistics operations of the Alcohol/Sugar producer Raízen, developed using the SIMIO simulation tool.

This paper presents a discrete-event simulation approach for a soil replacement project of great importance to the Brazilian government. This was part of the expansion work at GRU Airport, the greatest and most important of the country, and was being carried by the Brazilian Army. The airport should be ready for the increasing demand expected for World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016. The study started with the original deterministic schedule, and considered several external factors, like traffic, rain sea-sons and providers capacity. After evaluating many scenarios and identifying some bottlenecks, the best scenario was found, with a due date sooner than initially planned.

This paper studies the size distribution of hospitals and its underlying generative mechanisms. Based on the U.S. hospital data, we find that the size distribution is sub-lognormal (a leptokurtic distribution more skewed than normal but less skewed than lognormal). We develop an agent-based simulation model to simulate the preference behavior of patients and the service processes of hospitals. The model can produce a sub-lognormal size distribution similar to the U.S. hospital size distribution. Sensitivity analysis shows that the patients’ preference behavior and search distance are two key factors for the emergence of the sub-lognormal size distribution.

They had several business process and staffing changes they were considering; however, they had no way to test their options prior to implementation. After successfully simulating the First Notification of Loss to adjuster assignment process, Westfield decided to append the rest of the claims process. This resulted in an end-to-end claims process simulation, including adjudication, settlement, litigation, salvage, subrogation claims and fraud.

The possibility of increasing the efficiency of cargo port business process management is considered. The technology of balanced scorecard creating, from the choosing of strategy, constructing the tree of goals, making the specification of the tree of goals according to four perspectives: financial, customer, internal business processes, training and development; to the constructing of the strategic map of the cargo port, which includes the main indicators reflecting the results of the port business process, is described. The possibility of using the concept of an enterprise risk management system together with the concept of a balanced scorecard is also studied. An imitation model evaluating cargo port strategic risks, depending on the change in the input data model based on the construction of risk maps is presented.

Using an empirical dataset, we first examine the distribution of switching and associated bidding behavior in real auctions. We use this data to create an agent-based model that reproduces the price process observed in the empirical data. In this paper, a modeling ontology named DEVSMO is proposed. DEVSMO uses structured programming theory to express the programming logic and uses MathML to express the mathematical models in the model behavior. Structured programming theory and MathML provide a set of standard terminologies, so the generality of model representation is improved. Furthermore, DEVSMO supports both classic and parallel DEVS formalisms and has good reusability for other formalisms.

This paper documents the use of a discrete event simulation model to compare the effectiveness of forecasting systems available to support routine forecasts of criminal events in security applications. Military and police units regularly use forecasts of criminal events to divide limited resources, assign and redeploy special details, and conduct unit performance assessment. This paper presents a preliminary analysis to reduce patient waiting time for consultation in an outpatient eye clinic, using a data driven discrete event simulation model. Several proposed strategies, such as pool scheduling of patients, uniform patient arrivals and improved process flow, have been studied. It is found that patients’ irregular arrival pattern during a day is one of the main causes of the long waiting time. Simulation model of an eye clinic located in Singapore is used as the base case and the effects are quantified against the base model.

We develop an agent-based simulation of a tuberculosis (TB) epidemic in a single population, and consider a hierarchically structured contact network in three levels, typical of airborne diseases. The parameters are adopted from the literature, and the model is calibrated to a setting of high TB incidence. We model the dynamics of transmission at the individual level, and study the timing of secondary infections from a single source throughout the duration of the disease. We compare the patterns of transmission among different networks and discuss implications. Sensitivity analysis of outputs indicates the robustness of the results to variations in the parameter values.

The study aims mainly at exploring the application of modeling and simulation (M&S) in order to evaluate and provide performance results that could help measure the capacity and the capability of an existing mattress production line, and to further investigate whether the production line could cope with the firm’s expansion plan over the next five years. The simulation model was built and analyzed using the ProModel. The analysis found that the current production setup could not cope with the demand over the next five years. The results indicated that the new system was able to meet the new demand and cope with the proposed expansion plan.

A dual toll pricing is a conceptual policy in which policy maker imposes toll on both hazardous materials (hazmat) vehicles as well as regular vehicles for using populated road segments to mit-igate a risk of hazmat transportation. It intends to separate the hazmat traffic flow from the regu-lar traffic flow via control-ling the dual toll. In order to design the dual toll pricing policy on a highly realistic road network environment and detailed human behaviors, an extended BDI framework is employed to mimic human decision behaviors in great detail. The proposed approach is implemented in AnyLogic agent based simulation software with using a traffic data of Albany, NY. Also, search algorithms in OptQuest are used to determine the optimum dual toll pricing policy which results in the minimum risk and travel cost based on the simulation results. The result reveals the effectiveness of the proposed approach in devising a reliable policy under the realistic road network conditions.

Using extensive simulation experiments, we study the power of various alternative Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) tests based on data transformations. Among available alternative tests, we find the one with the greatest power in testing a nonhomogeneous Poisson Process (NHPP). Furthermore, we devise a new method to test a sequence of i.i.d. random variables with a specified continuous cdf; it first transforms a given sequence to a rate-1 Poisson process (PP) and then applies the existing KS test of a PP. We show that it has greater power than direct KS tests.

A classic Kriging or Gaussian process (GP) metamodel estimates the variance of its predictor by plugging-in the estimated GP (hyper) parameters; namely, the mean, variance, and covariances. The problem is that this predictor variance is biased. To solve this problem for deterministic simulations, we propose «conditional simulation» (CS), which gives predictions at an old point that in all bootstrap samples equal the observed value. CS accounts for the randomness of the estimated GP parameters.

This article surveys the major approaches for the shortterm and the long-term morbidity forecasting. Their limitations and the practical application possibilities are pointed out. The paper presents the conventional time series analysis methods — regression and autoregressive models; machine learning-based approaches — Bayesian networks and artificial neural networks; case-based reasoning; filtration-based techniques. The most known mathematical models of infectious diseases are mentioned: classical equation-based models (deterministic and stochastic), modern simulation models (network
and agent-based).

An important, but often neglected, part of any sound simulation study is that of modeling each source of system randomness by an appropriate probability distribution. We first give some examples of data sets from real-world simulation studies, which is followed by a discussion of two critical pitfalls in simulation input modeling. The two major methods for modeling a source of randomness when corresponding data are available are delineated, namely, fitting a theoretical probability distribution to the data and the use of an empirical distribution. We then give a three-activity approach for choosing the theoretical distribution that best represents a set of observed data.

This paper presents a sub-class of DEVS, called elapsed-time-sensitive DEVS (ES-DEVS). In order to provide a more convenient and intuitive way to build simulation models for timed systems, conditions on elapsed times are imposed on state transitions caused by input events. While still verifiable, ES-DEVS is more expressive than finite and deterministic DEVS that is another verifiable and deterministic class of DEVS. ES-DEVS models could be exhaustively verified based on reachability analysis techniques.

To support the work of terminal planners, we propose a simulation model that returns an accurate estimate of the number of reshuffles required with respect to a given loading sequence plan and a given yard configuration. The simulation model accounts for great details on operations under stochastic conditions. The estimates returned do not deteriorate as the dimension and complexity of the problem grow. Numerical experiments carried out for a real container terminal show how the model may easily support the planners in their daily job.

We propose an event delivery mechanism for the parallel simulator to incorporate emulated events originated from the physical system. We augment the parallel simulation API to support emulation capabilities independent from a particular simulation domain. Preliminary experiments demonstrate the our simulator’s real-time performance on high-performance computing platforms.

As a result, the preoperative assessment process is frequently prolonged by missing information, potentially leading to surgery delay or cancellation. In this study, we simulate an anesthesiology pre-operative assessment clinic to quantify the impact of patient information deficiency and to assist in the development of a patient-centered surgical home to mitigate this problem through better system-wide coordination.

This paper presents the results of a simulation using physical objects. This concept integrates the physical dimensions of an entity such as length, width, and weight, with the usual process flow paradigm, recurrent in the discrete event simulation models. Based on a naval logistics system, we applied this technique in an access channel of the largest port of Latin America. This system is composed by vessel movement constrained by the access channel dimensions. The success delivered by the methodology proposed was an accurate validation of the model, approximately 0.45% of deviation, when compared to real data.

This paper presents how reengineering of the dispatch operations using simulation helped in reducing the Wagon Turnaround Times to the desired level. Our approach was to use a flexible push-pull based dispatch scheduling instead of the current pull and wait model. Our recommendations included decoupling railways operations from the internal mills there-by avoiding wagon set breaks and reassembly, investing in optimum number of captive locomotives and wagon sets, scheduling mechanism for captive locomotives, creation of an intermediate storage to stack products according to dispatch schedules and ensuring just-in-time material availability for dispatch.

The AutoMod product suite from Applied Materials has been used on thousands of projects to help engineers and managers make the best decisions possible. AutoMod supports hierarchical model construction. This architecture allows users to reuse model components in other models, decreasing the time required to build a model. In addition, recent enhancements to AutoMod’s material handling template systems have in-creased modeling accuracy and ease-of-use. These latest advances have helped make AutoMod one of the most widely used simulation software packages.
